My Dad

Lately I've been searching for the past
Going through the cedar chest
And traveling through my mind,
Trying to make the memories last
Even looking through old photos of every kind

I found some photos of my dad.
Some with mom when they first met.
Some are happy, some are sad.
His smiling face I never will forget.

He wasn't a joiner, didn't care for a crowd.
(except at the Irish club)
My dad was quiet, never made a fuss
Very seldom was he ever loud
Only when we were really naughty
and even then we knew he loved us.

I found his ring from his old school
And one cufflink, guess the other one he lost.
Something he made in woodshop, that's really cool.
These are priceless, couldn't get rid of them at any cost.

I can see him now, smiling down on me
I hope he knows these are tears of joy.
I have so many happy memories, you see
I was a daddys girl amid three boys.

My dad was an old fashioned dad.
A typical Irishman who liked his beer,
A happy man who called my brothers "Lad"
I love that man and still miss him after all these years.

I gave him a special birthday gift one year
I gave birth to a little girl that he adored
And I know the heavens were filled with cheer
When this year she had a little boy
And it was on his birthday once more.

I love searching through things from the past,
I like to keep some on a table all together.
Little momentos to make my memories last
And help to keep my dad here with me forever.

I Love You Dad
